If you’re wondering how long you need to walk on a treadmill to achieve 10,000 steps, several factors will come into play. While outdoor walking remains popular, using a treadmill offers a convenient and weather-independent option for reaching this target. "A walk or easy jog would provide the highest benefit and the lowest negative impact on the body to be able to come back into the next interval comfortably recovered," concludes Wolfe. With the massive popularity of fitness trackers and the emphasis on maintaining an active lifestyle, many individuals strive to achieve the recommended goal of taking 10,000 steps per day. Beyond 60 seconds, standing still gives your muscles the opportunity to start to tighten." When you keep moving (but take it easy) in your off-moments, your muscles receive better oxygen and blood flow. "If the recovery time between intervals is less than one minute, a standing recovery is fine. "Recovery between intervals shouldn't cost you the energy you need to come back strong into your next quality block of work," she says. In order to get the most out of your interval training, Wolfe says you need to take the recovery between bursts of effort seriously. Interval: Maintain a very challenging pace up your 3.0 to 5.0 hill for 60 seconds, return the treadmill to 1.0 and hold the same pace for 60 seconds, jog for 60 seconds. Warm up: Spend 5 to 10 minutes warming up with a brisk walk or jog to get your body moving and raise your heart rate. If you're on a treadmill, you can alternate between an incline in the range of 3.0 to 5.0 and flat ground (1.0)," says Wolfe. If you're outside, find an incline that either tops out on flat ground or has a nice downhill on the back side and set yourself up to start at a place where it would take you 45- to 60 seconds worth of a very challenging effort to make it to the top. The challenge: "I'm a big fan of hills for many reasons. To master hilly runs, crank that treadmill up to 5.0 Interval: 3 minutes at your 10K pace followed by 90 seconds at 5K pace and 45-second full-on sprint. "Use each time you make it through an interval as an opportunity to throw yourself a little party and say 'I crushed that!' Then enjoy the benefits of the relief on the other side of the hard work!" Be grateful for the speed that feels impossibly challenging in the moment, or for those hills that feel never-ending, because they're the reason that your easier paces feel easy and downhills and flat ground feel so good," says the running coach. "I like to approach interval training in any form-whether it's intervals of speed or hills-with this mindset: use the challenge of tougher circumstances to your advantage. Interval training helps you get in the habit of breaking down that psychological wall. It takes mental fortitude to propel yourself into another hill repeat when you'd rather flop onto the couch and morn your aching glutes. "I think there's a giant-and very undervalued-psychological benefit to interval training as well," she says. According to Wolfe, the brain benefits of the training modality may be even better. Those bodily benefits may be enticing enough to convince you to sprint for the treadmill, but they're really just scratching the surface. Simply put, interval training is an effective way to build your body's tolerance to the demands of your goals-regardless of whether they're distance, time, or overall fitness-based," explains the runner. "Cardiovascular function improves, post-workout metabolism increases for an extended amount of time, muscle fibers build resiliency and quicker response, and you'll experience increased endurance both aerobically and anaerobically. On a physical level, interval-style workouts work head-to-toe magic. Then, it recruiting the body (and mind!!) to push you to that tough spot again." -Melissa Wolfe, coach at Mile High Run Club "Interval running pushes your body to work through short bursts of tough efforts and to recover within a restricted amount of time. "The perception of tough efforts may be created using speed, hills, ratio of work to recovery, or a combination of those things." Then, it recruiting the body (and mind!!) to push you to that tough spot again," says Melissa Wolfe, a coach at New York City’s Mile High Run Club. After all, the number one complaint about pounding pavement is usually that it's "so boring." But that just isn't the case with interval running, which keeps your body guessing mile after mile. Whether you adore running or despise it, discovering interval training for the first time can feel straight-up serendipitous. In this notation, the anode, or oxidation half-cell is on the left and the cathode, or reduction half-cell is on the right. A convenient short-hand notation for this is: We can understand the direction of electron flow by breaking this into half-reactions:Įlectrons are leaving the Zn half-cell and going towards the Pb half-cell. The schematic shows the cell set up for the spontaneous reaction between Zn metal and Pb 2+ ions: The images to the right show what a carrou cell looks like in the laboratory, and how we depict it schematically. The paper is wet with the salt solution, to ensure ions can flow through the paper. This is done by filling the center well with a salt solution, and using paper to connect each of the outer wells to the center well. The salt bridge connecting two of these outer wells passes Each of the outer wells holds a half-cell. Number of wells that serve as the above beakers. In our laboratory, we will be using a Carrou cell, which provides a more convenient means to carry out experiments on electrochemical cells. The flow of electricity in the circuit is maintained by the electrons moving through the wires and the ions moving through solution. The electrons travel between the electrodes on the wire and never enter the solution. Keep in mind that in an electrochemical cell, only the ions travel in solution. Video explains this setup and details the process at a molecular level:Īfter watching the video, please complete the diagram below to identify the key components in an electrochemical cell: We then connect these cells together (using a wire and a salt bridge) to create an electrical circuit. For the reduction half-cell, a strip of Cu metal is placed in a The oxidation reaction, a strip of Zn metal is placed in a solution of Zn 2+ ions. The electrochemical cell consists of two "half-cells" that correspond to each of the above half-cell reactions. The electrochemical cell forces the electrons to flow through a wire as they go from Zn to the Cu 2+ ions. Previously, we wrote half-reactions that illustrate the nature of this electron flow: In this redox reaction, electrons are transferred from Zn to Cu 2+. In the movie on the previous page, when a zinc strip is placed in a solution with Cu 2+ ions, the following spontaneous redox reaction occurs: Electrochemistry: Galvanic Cells and the Nernst EquationĮlectrochemistry Tutorial: Galvanic Cells and the Nernst Equation > Step 2: The Electrochemical CellĮlectrochemistry: Galvanic Cells and the Nernst Equation Step 2: The Electrochemical Cell The double vertical lines refer to the salt bridge - note that the salt bridge must be an inert salt to both ions present in both compartments of the galvanic cell. The single vertical lines indicate the boundary (phase difference) between solid #Ni# and #Ni^(2+)# ions in the aqueous solution of the first compartment and between solid #Ag# and #Ag^(+)# ions present in the aqueous solution of the second compartments. Start with the anode components (site of oxidation) - the cathode components are listed to the right. Note that the anode is the site of oxidation (where electrons are lost) and the cathode (where electron are gained) is the site for reduction. Manipulate the two equations so that #E_(cell)^o # is positive. In the galvanic cell, the reaction is spontaneous and for a spontaneous reaction #E_(cell)^o # must be a positive quantity. Normally, the values are listed at the back of most chemistry textbooks. Start by finding the standard reduction potential for the #Ag^+ # and #Ni^(2+)# ion. This has saved my butt more than once on Gmail, and it’s nice seeing it added to Mail. Undo Send for Mail is a long awaited one, giving you a few extra seconds to rethink that message. Those two features are the most exciting day to day additions, but some others warrant call out. After a few days or weeks, I tend to forget about them altogether. Maybe it’s my own scatterbrained approach to working, or maybe the features haven’t been baked into the end user experience in a way that lends itself to stickiness (maybe both?). I tend to find these things interesting in my initial review, but they never really stick. I’m always skeptical of any new workflow feature. Stage Manager is the other feature I’ve found myself most regularly utilizing since downloading Ventura. More useful is the addition of handoff for FaceTime that makes it possible to quickly switch between devices while on a call. Desk View is an interesting - if not particularly useful addition - that can shoot your hands via overhead view. Center Stage works with the feature to follow you as you move and incorporate others into the frame. It’s a nice option to have in these days of remote work. Obviously, the ideal here would be improving the built-in cameras, but while the company has made the jump from 780 to 1080p on newer systems, the iPhone still wins out.Īpple Belkin Continuity Camera macOS. The MacBook wasn’t designed with that in mind, but I guess we’ve got to have faith that the company thinks it won’t put too much strain if they’re actively encouraging users to do it. Honestly, by biggest concern there is the stress the full weight of an iPhone will put on the lid/hinge in the long run. Like Ventura, the clip-on is still in beta, though again, it didn’t give me any problems. Or you can use the metal ring to stand it up on the desk - though the former makes it much easier to make eye contact while looking at your screen. A small, rubber lip lets you rest the phone on the MacBook’s lid. It utilizes the phone’s MageSafe magnets to snap onto the back. As you can see from below, there’s a marked difference in quality between the 14-inch M1 MacBook’s on-board camera (left) and the rear-facing on the iPhone 12 (right).īig difference between the 14-inch M1 MacBook’s on-board camera (left) and the rear-facing on the iPhone 12 (right). I tried it out on FaceTime, Zoom and Google Hangouts, and they all were able to use the iPhone. Once the upgrades are complete, your Mac should automatically detect the connected device and offer it in the drop-down menu of compatible video chat platforms. I was honestly a bit surprised by how seamless the two worked together. Download Ventura on your macOS and iOS 16 on a compatible device, and your iPhone will double as a webcam. It builds upon an earlier feature of the same name, bringing something far more useful for most of us, day-to-day. I should add the standard caveat here that comes with using beta software, though I’ve not found this latest version to be particularly buggy.Ĭontinuity Camera was the headline feature back at WWDC - both in terms of functionality and just general novelty. We’ve been fiddling around with the latest build over the past several days, and are largely satisfied with the upgrades contained therein. The company stuck to its word, releasing lucky number macOS 13 this morning (alongside the rest) for everyone who likes to live life very slightly on the edge, after rounds and rounds of bug testing. Back at WWDC, Apple promised to make the public beta of macOS Ventura available in July. Inducted into the college football hall of fame in 1996 and OSU all-century team. OSU backfield that national championship season was Paul Warfield (Browns, Dolphins), Matt Snell (Jets) and Ferguson. Just as successful at OSU, where he was a unanimous All-American in 1960-61, the college player of the year in ’61 and runner-up to Ernie Davis as Heisman winner that season. He backed that up the next week with 475 yards against Monroe. He put a single-game Trojans rushing record of 529 yards on Kiser as a junior in 1956, a mark that remains No. An original bruiser, he was 6-1 and 200 pounds of off-tackle greatness. Switched to the offensive line and by his fourth season he was considered among the NFL’s best at guard. Undrafted, he signed with the Chargers as a free agent. Had some of his best games against OSU while blocking for QB Antwaan Randle El. Had the good fortune of playing for future San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron at IU. Landed at Indiana, following a family tradition of playing for the Hoosiers. Kris Dielman, DL, 1999: A mountainous and menacing presence at 6-4 and about 310 pounds at his biggest, was a mobile tight end and linebacker for the Trojans and also a starting center on the basketball team. Brother Scot Brewer was Troy’s coach for four seasons until Burgbacher took over.ģ. Undrafted, Brewer lasted until the final preseason cut by the Ravens as a free agent. Among other reasons for that was Cooper’s failure to recruit one of Ohio’s best backs. After Brewer rushed for more than 100 yards, scored three TDs and accounted for more than 200 all-purpose yards in the 2001 Outback Bowl defeat of OSU, Cooper was fired. Second in Big Ten rushing that season – to Griffin, who would win his second straight Heisman Trophy at OSU. Accounted for 1,714 all-purpose yards as a Wolverines’ senior and was team MVP. Teamed with Rob Lytle to become the first backs in Michigan history to each gain 1,000 yards in the same season. Initially committed to Notre Dame, but signed with Michigan, which qualifies him as an original “flipper.” Totaled more than 3,000 yards rushing as a junior and senior. Bell consistently hit home runs from the backfield, returning punts and kickoffs. The star of many stars on the undefeated 1970-71 teams. Here’s who we consider the all-time seven best football players at Troy High School, the ninth in a continuing series. The University of Tennessee “T” on Troy’s helmets is long gone, but not the legacy that landed those players in Trojans history. The Trojans’ good times have spanned the Miami Valley League (1926-68), the Western Ohio League (1968-82), the Greater Miami Valley Conference (1982-2001) and now the Greater Western Ohio Conference (2001-present). It wasn’t unusual for the visitors’ side of the 10,500-seat signature venue to be packed … with Troy fans. Troy Memorial Stadium was a hot ticket on football Friday nights during those extra-special seasons. Since then some of the state’s best players have worn the scarlet and gray colors for coaches Lou Juillerat (Bob Ferguson era), Jim Conard (Gordon Bell era), Barry Blackstone (mid-1970s) and Steve Nolan (1984-2011). Trojans’ football dates at least back to 1899 when Troy played rival Piqua the first time. Massillon Washington might be the go-to storied high school football program in northern Ohio, but its match in the lower half of the state is Troy. Despite its medium coverage, for the most part, skin looks flawless, but in a healthy and radiant kind of way rather than ultra smooth and matte because of a heavier base. Once applied, the best way that I can describe Luminous Silk’s look on the skin is like a freshly opened, untouched pack of butter – completely smooth, slightly matte, slightly sheeny. I found that two pumps were more than enough to get good coverage. The coverage is medium and buildable – Meghan Markle famously said that she liked that it allowed her freckles to peek through – and it has a skin-like finish, which is worth bearing in mind if you prefer something very heavy duty and matte (if so, our Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation review may be of interest) Its consistency also stretches quite far, so it’s possible to apply a very small amount for everyday wear and build up when you need more coverage, say, for a special occasion. The foundation comes in a broad range of 40 different shades, which are slightly flexible at this time of year my pale skin is at its palest, and my best shade match was 1.5, though I’ve previously worn shades 2 and 2.5 during the summer. This aligns it with skincare-skewed bases such as the best serum foundations in terms of glow and also means it doesn’t feel at all heavy on the skin. What makes Armani’s Luminous Silk formula so unique is its patented micro-fil technology, which enables the pigments to sit perfectly on the skin and help the foundation strike that all-important balance between healthy luminosity and the mattifying powers of setting powder. The formula also contains glycerin, but very dry skin types might find that they need a base with more moisturizing ingredients. Despite having “luminous” in the name and a hint of dewiness to the finish, this foundation is actually both oil-free and non-comedogenic (the technical term for ingredients that won’t clog pores), making it a contender as one of the best foundations for oily skin that isn’t super matte. I did this through several highly curated playlists and a series of smart playlists of artists, genres or other criteria, I can’t remember the last time I purchased music through the iTunes Music Store, because for over 10 years I’ve exclusively bought music through Amazon’s digital music service. Serif Affinity Photo has a wide range of features that can cater to any photo editing need, whether you are a beginner or an expert. What are the features of Serif Affinity Photo? Serif Affinity Photo aims to provide a more affordable and user-friendly alternative to Photoshop, without compromising on quality and features. Besides, you’ll be able to upload your PSD files and other assets into your Adobe Creative Cloud storage, then edit your images on either your desktop or mobile device, and everything gets automatically synchronized in real-time.Serif Affinity Photo was launched in 2015 as a competitor to Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard photo editing software. Therefore, you’ll be able to enjoy a cloud-based workflow where all your files are securely stored remotely. A mobile Photoshop version isn't as powerful as that of Affinity Photo, but here's the upside – every Photoshop subscription includes a certain amount of cloud storage from Adobe. This means you'll need to transfer your images manually or use a service like iCloud for synchronization. Keep in mind that Affinity doesn't have a cloud-based system for synchronizing and storing files. It's important to note that it lacks certain options like batch exporting, but it can read AFPHOTO files. If you prefer using Affinity Photo on iPad, you can get the app for a very affordable price, and it replicates most of the features of the desktop version. Moreover, all files will successfully work no matter what device or OS you use.Īffinity Photo makes it simple to switch between your desktop computer and iPad, which can be especially useful for people who use multiple devices. It simplifies the work with files and eliminates many problems with platforms and versions. The design and edits are not disrupted if the picture is opened in various applications. All the effects, layers, and adjustments are thoroughly controlled so you shouldn’t worry about the integrity of the image. In Photoshop you may also import or edit PSD files and export anything you need. Besides, Affinity Photo offers an Export Persona feature that lets you export your photos in various formats such as RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and PNG. Keep this in mind when choosing between Affinity Designer vs Photoshop. While Affinity Photo can open PSD files and even export its own files in PSD format, Adobe Photoshop cannot do anything with AFPHOTO files. The program also has a similar non-destructive file format called AFPHOTO. Affinity Photo is compatible with a range of file formats, including PSD (which is the native format of Photoshop), meaning you can seamlessly handle files from Ps. And weighing in at 8.5 ounces (241g), the Sage was a bit too large for one-handed reading. It’s 6.3 x 7.1 inches (161 x 181 mm) and 0.3 inches (7.6 mm) thick, making it shorter but wider than an iPad mini. There’s no denying that the Sage comes in a large package. If you do a lot of sideloading of books, the Dropbox integration means you don’t have to plug the device in to a computer in order to copy files over. Any PDFs or ePub ebooks that you drop in to that folder automatically sync to the device. The single best feature of the Sage is probably its integration with Dropbox, which creates a Rakuten Kobo folder inside your Apps folder on Dropbox. I am personally a bit skeptical of using an 8-inch screen as a PDF reader, but people who are marking up documents all the time should take note. One feature of the Sage that I didn’t test is its support for Kobo’s stylus, which allows you to write notes on documents such as PDFs. It’s the same approach Amazon takes with the Kindle Oasis. Its design is asymmetric, with a larger bezel on one side-the one with the page-turn buttons-to aid in gripping the device. The Sage is plastic but well constructed, with a screen that’s flush with its bezel and a textured pattern on the back to make it a bit more grippy. (Yes, the Sage has physical page-turn buttons.) If you have vision problems and need to display text at large sizes, the Sage will reduce the number of times you need to click to see the next page. (The Sage is a direct successor of the 8-inch Kobo Forma, which I have never used.) I likened the Aura One to a hardcover, or maybe a trade paperback-it’s a bigger and heavier device, but you do get to see more words on the page. Its 8-inch diagonal screen reminds me of the 7.8-inch screen on its predecessor, the Kobo Aura One. The $260 Kobo Sage is a big, beautiful ereader. That alone would be reason enough to rejoice. Timing – Exact timing control can be critical, and Mitti boasts low latency, a GPU playback engine, and can run from an SMPTE based internal clock, or slave to external hardware or software sources. (And for further depth – go to the control menu, choose Mitti, then Preferences, to see a very well organised array of options) The Interface – a strength would seem to be the efforts spent in making a very clear and intuitive interface for Mitti – it comes across as clean and easy to navigate, with extended options available where they might be expected. Running at it’s most minimal, with a playlist of clips, Mitti appears deceptively simple – but comes dense with custom controls at every level. And when getting simple playback exactly right becomes important, for events, theatre, installations etc – this is where Mitti seems to be aiming at, in the ballpark of apps like Playback Pro, QLAB or perhaps Millumin, where cues and critical timing are given more priority than visual effects. The flexibility of most VJ software is also one of it’s limitations – the strength of real-time effects and mixing, tending to make interfaces more obtuse than they need to be for users seeking simple playback. VJ software of course brings a flexibility and reliability to playback control – taking care of the basics such as fading to black, or looping upon finish of clip, cross-fading, or simply – avoiding the desktop suddenly appearing on the main projected screen. (By *Newest, I mean it’s been around since late 2016, but since then, Mitti has enjoyed a steady rate of notable additions and updates.)Īfter all the work that can go into video material for an event, playback control can sometimes be left as an afterthought – it’s not unknown to see videos being played back from video editing software and ‘live-scrubbed’, or to watch users flipping between their desktop and powerpoint / keynote / Quicktime etc. Software Adventure-Time! Newest* video kid on the block = Mitti, a “modern, feature-packed but easy-to-use pro video cue playback solution for events, theatre, audiovisual shows, performances and exhibitions,” – coming from the same stable that brought us Vezer (the timeline based midi/osc/dmx sequencer) and COGE (the versatile VJ software). |
